ABBAs diskografi

Den svenske kvartetten er den eneste gruppen som har klart å gjøre internasjonal suksesskarriere etter Melodi Grand Prix. I seg selv en betenkelig bragd, men Abba klarte å riste av seg MGP-stempelet og etablere seg som popmusikkens flaggskip på andre halvdel av 70-tallet.

De klarte også noe som svært få utenom Elvis og Beatles har klart; det kunststykket å bli populære både blant kritikere og et publikum bestående av mennesker i alle aldre, fra alle lag av samfunnet.

Huskes for musikken

Dette klarte de av flere

grunner. Jentenes sex appeal hadde selvsagt mye å si, men i ettertid huskes Abba først og fremst for musikken. Nesten 30 år senere virker den like frisk og fengende som da den ble laget.

Benny Andersson og Björn Ulvaeus viste usedvanlig stor spennvidde som komponister – alt fra revyviser til rock’n’roll – og de la stor vekt på melodier. I tillegg brukte de god tid på å bygge opp detaljerte arrangementer med førsteklasses lyd, og i ryggen hadde de Sveriges mest erfarne studiomusikere.

Resultatet var noen av de best produserte platene i moderne musikkhistorie.

Bingo i Brighton

Eventyret om Abba begynte i … tja, det kommer an på hvor i verden man bor. I alle andre steder enn i Skandinavia begynte historien om Abba i Brighton, England 6. april 1974. Det var dagen da de slo knock-out på konkurrentene i Melodi Grand Prix med ”Waterloo.”

Men skandinaver vet bedre. Abba var ikke noen ny gruppe i 1974. Kvartetten i seg selv hadde eksistert i to år, og alle medlemmene var etablerte stjerner allerede før de startet Abba.

Hep Stars

Benny Andersson var den mest kjente av de fire. Han kom med i Sveriges mest populære rockeband – Hep

Stars – i oktober 1964, bare 18 år gammel. I løpet av kort tid hadde han overtatt det musikalske ansvaret i bandet.

Han skrev hit-låter som ”No Response,” ”Sunny Girl” og ”Wedding,” introduserte afrikansk folkemusikk til svensk ungdom gjennom ”Malaika,” og var i stor grad ansvarlig for at Hep Stars gikk over til morsmålet med ”I natt jag drömde.”

Benny var også tidlig ute med å blande svensk folkemusikk inn i rock. Den musikalske forløperen til Abba kan høres på Hep Stars-platen ”Spelemann” fra 1969. Samme år som den ble gitt ut, delte Hep Stars seg i to. Benny Andersson valgte å konsentrere seg om låtskriving sammen med en annen musiker han var blitt kjent med tre år i forveien; Björn Ulvaeus.

Hootenanny Singers

Mens Benny kom fra rock, hadde Björn lang erfaring fra folkeviser med Hootenanny Singers. Denne gruppen oppnådde stor popularitet i Sverige fra 1964, men etter tre år begynte Björn å lengte etter rock. Benny kom ham til unnsetning.

De to begynte å komponere flittig sammen, og ble i løpet av 1969 hyret til sangforlaget Polar Music av dets eier Stig ”Stikkan” Anderson. ”Stikkan” ble også deres manager og medhjelper.

Nye kjærester

Både Björn og Benny fikk nye kjærester ved inngangen til 70-tallet. Björn falt for blonde Agnetha Fältskog som hadde gitt ut en rekke plater allerede som tenåring, mens Benny fant mørkhårede, norskfødte Anni-Frid Lyngstad som hadde lang erfaring fra både jazz og pop.

Til å begynne med var det ikke meningen at jentene skulle være med. Björn og Benny opptrådte som duo, og ga ut lp’en ”Lycka” i 1970. Litt etter litt ble jentene innlemmet, men selv den første utgivelsen i USA – singlen ”People Need Love” på Playboy Records – ble kreditert til Björn & Benny med det sensuelt betonede ”with Svenska Flicka” i parentes.

Fire fornavn – ett gruppenavn

På de neste utgivelsene i Norden ble alle fire listet opp – Björn & Benny, Agnetha & Frida. Til slutt bestemte ”Stikkan” seg for å gi gruppen en lettere benevnelse. Han tok initialene i fornavnene og satte dem sammen til et navn som kunne uttales på alle språk: ABBA. Enkelt og greitt.

Før dette navneskiftet fant sted, deltok kvartetten i det svenske Melodi Grand Prix i februar 1973. ”Ring Ring” var sterk nok til å vinne, det mente i hvert fall folkejuryen, men dommerpanelet dømte den ned til en tredjeplass. Platen sørget likevel for et solid gjennombrudd for gruppen i Norden.

Et liv etter Grand Prix

Abba meldte seg på Melodi Grand Prix året etter, av den enkle grunn at de ville ut i verden. ”Stikkan” var overbevist om at Abba kunne bli popstjerner, og Björn & Benny følte på sin side at de hadde potensialet som skulle til for å skrive låter som ville holde populariteten ved like.

De fleste lo da seieren var et faktum: Abba var blitt stjerner over natten, og ville i likhet med alle tidligere MGP-vinnere forsvinne før neste finale ble avholdt.

Til å begynne med så det ut som om skeptikerne ville få rett. Det tok tre singler og et helt år før Abba klarte å tangere suksessen med ”Waterloo.” De gjorde det med ”SOS” i 1975, og fra da av hadde de verden for sine føtter.

En umiskjennelig stil

De første platene til Abba var tydelig inspirert av 60-tallets produsent-geni Phil Spector. Etter hvert blandet Benny Andersson mer og mer inn den svenske folkemusikken. Det var aldri noen tvil om at det var Abba man hørte på. De hadde helt fra starten av en egen, umiskjennelig stil der det var rom for utallige tangenter og sangstemmer.

Mange av tekstene var selvbiografiske. To eksempler er ”The Winner Takes It All” og ”When All Is Said And Done” som omhandler skilsmissene som de to parene gjennomlevde samtidig som platesalget bare steg og steg.

Naturlig oppløsning

Det kom ikke som noen overraskelse da Abba ble oppløst i 1982. Det skjedde helt naturlig og i all stillhet mens arbeidet på en ny lp foregikk. Det ble rett og slett for slitsomt for to fraskilte par å samarbeide. Dessuten var det ikke moro lenger.

Etter oppløsningen ga Frida og Agnetha ut henholdsvis to og tre plater før de begge trakk seg tilbake fra artistlivet.

Björn og Benny gjorde stor suksess med musikalen ”Chess,” skrevet i samarbeid med briten Tim Rice i 1984. Oppfølgeren var en musikal basert på romanverket ”Utvandrere” av forfatteren Vilhelm Moberg.

Fornyet popularitet

Nesten 20 år etter at de slo igjennom for første gang, oppnådde Abba fornyet eksplosiv popularitet takket være samlingen ”Abba Gold.” En helt ny generasjon oppdaget supergruppen fra Sverige, mens gamle tilhengere gjenopplevde de fantastiske minnene fra 70-tallet.

I tillegg kom alle angrerne – disse som i sin tid hadde skjelt ut Abba og sverget at de aldri skulle kjøpe en plate med dem. Nå måtte de krype til korset og innrømme kvartettens suverenitet.

Nettopp der er vi ved kjernen: Dette at platene til Abba har bevist sin musikalske kvalitet, selv blant hardnakkede tvilere. Når gamle fiender innrømmer sine feil og en helt ny generasjon kan omfavne foreldrenes idoler med like stor lidenskap, kan artistene ta det som et tegn på at musikken deres er tidløs.

Abba har overlevd musikkens hardeste dommer – tidens tann.
